About the Department

 

Established in 2023, the North Coast Research Support Centre (NCRSC) is a key component of the North Coast Medical Training College (NCMTC) in Kilifi, Kenya. The Centre is committed to advancing the applied research capabilities of the college’s students and staff. In collaboration with the Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM) at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Netherlands, NCMTC is engaged in a research project funded by NUFFIC. ESHPM’s goal is to conduct impactful research that complies with both local and international ethical standards, focusing on publishing joint articles and involving students from both Dutch and Kenyan institutions in the research process. NCMTC aims to conduct research that is relevant and applied, enhance research networks, foster a strong research culture among its staff and students, and increase its publication efforts.

Objectives

Following several discussions towards the end of 2023
within the research committee, four priority research themes for North Coast
Medical Training College (NCMTC) were identified for the period 2024-2026.
 

  • Community Based Education and Service (COBES) system and Health
    Information Points (HIPs) 
     
  • Elderly health and well-being  
  • Problems among youth, specifically mental health and SRHR 
  • Medical education

Key Studies and Research Projects  

Currently, four research studies are being conducted simultaneously; 

  • Understanding Health Challenges Among Older Adults: An Explorative Study in The Bomani Community Using Mixed-Methods Approach 
  • Community Health – An Integrated Approach to Understand the Community Health Information Points, And Community Based Education and Service  
  • Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management Practices Among High School-Going Adolescent Girls in Kilifi South Sub-County in Kenya  

 

  • The Prevalence and Factors Associated with Drug and Substance Abuse Amongst Students at North Coast Medical Training College
