Health for the elderly

As you grow older, you go through many changes, and you may need to adjust your lifestyle for healthy aging. Healthy eating and regular Physical exercises can be keys to good health at any age. Making suitable lifestyle choices may also prevent some health problems, such as diabetes, and other chronic diseases.  

Community Health Promotion Fund (CHPF) has been on the forefront in addressing the challenges affecting the elderly. This id through the intervention programs such as ; homebased care, mental health initiatives, monthly patient meetings, monthly elderly meetings and so forth. 

The initiatives aim at addressing challenges that the elderly faces on daily basis in the community. Apart from the elderly, caregivers are also traned on how to address the challenges facing the elderly. 

AIM

  • To document all elderly people and follow them as long as possible
  • Routinely examine elderly people and document their health status
  • Take the elderly through appropriate mental and controlled physical activities and deliver specific health messages during each activity
  • Occasionally, conduct mass screening for chronic illness and treatment for communal afflictions and diseases of the society.

Milestones

  1. Treating and preventing common illness found in old age e.g jiggers, scabies lice and intestinal worms
  2. Screening for common conditions associated with old age and treat them early e.g tumors and malignancies, malnutrition, diabetes, hypertension, teeth and oral problems, eye problems and the like
  3. Providing emergency services and first aid where necessary.
  4. Bringing together old people to enjoy company of each other and share experience.
  5. Offering psychosocial support to the elderly.

CARE FOR THE ELDERLY

Community health promotion fund  (CHPF) through the initiative of health for the elderly has a better plan to cater for the welfare of the aged in the society. The programme involves the home based health care services offered by the nurses from the organization.

Over time the organization has been acting with the vision to achieving universal healthcare. The intervention programmes involve : palliative, preventive and promotive.

The elderly who suffer from chronic illnesses receive medical services from their homes. As a result we reduce the costs for them on access to medical services.

CHPF-HBC To The Patients

Home-based care program was introduced in the year 2022 to support patients who are in critical condition, patients who are not able to come to the dispensary. The program is being done by the Community Health Promotion Fund doctors, clinical officers, social worker, physiotherapy, community health promoters and students from NMCT. The students mainly are coming in for learning and exposed to the community health dynamics.

Hypertensive clients normally benefits from regular home visits from NCMTC students, trainers and community health promoters.
clients with high blood pressure  are normally referred to the nearest health facility for further investigation and those with stable blood pressure receive counselling on drug adherence, excursive, nutrition as well as stress management.
 

We have 200 patients on hypertension and diabetes, in records and …… are stable client whom are attending their clinic and adherence to drugs. As a project we give them health talks at the clinic’s day, HIPs and during outreaches.

International Day for The Elderly

Celebrating with the elderly is a treatment to psychological issues to them. CHPF through the Health for the Elderly do carry out activities that provides solutions to the issues affecting the elderly in the community.

In attendance was the advocates for the elderly program, the administration and the guests from the office of gender sports and culture Kilifi county Kilifi south sub-county.  
The event was attended by one hundred and sixty (160) elderly people. There were also medical care services. 
This programme has played a vital role in the community such health services and psychosocial support projects. 
The community has impressed the programme and the wellbeing of the elderly is well checked into.
